A Few Simple Tips Go a Long Way in Preventing Outdoor Sports Injuries
Engaging in indoor and outdoor sports and games is healthy for kids. It keeps them moving and in good shape. While the benefits of rigorous outdoor play are numerous, games like football, baseball, skiing and swimming can also put children at greater risk for injuries.
When kids are at play it's important to keep safety in mind. In many cases injuries are preventable if parents and children follow some simple safety precautions.
Here are a few ways children can avoid injury and still have an active summer vacation:
- Children should always wear appropriate protective gear, including helmets, elbow and knee pads, mouth guards and well-fitting shoes that are appropriate for the activity.
- Children should be sure to stretch adequately before engaging in any physical activity, especially one that requires running or agility. Stretching can help to greatly minimize injury.
- Children should be reminded to listen to their bodies. If they feel pain during an activity or experience an injury —even a minor one—they should be sure to stop and tell an adult.
- Dehydration can come on quickly, especially during warmer weather. Children should always have easy access to drinking water when they are playing outdoors.
Even if you follow these tips, injuries are bound to happen sometimes. In the event of an injury, be sure to seek medical attention immediately.
